Work begins on sanitary sewer and water main replacement project in Cheboygan

CHEBOYGAN — Construction started Monday on a multi-million dollar project to improve the roadway and utility structure in parts of Cheboygan.

The project, which totals between $4-5 million, will improve infrastructure on Ball Street, Bailey Street, Littlefield Street and the alleyway in-between Ball Street and Bailey Street, north of Division Street. The project is part of the Ball Street and Bailey Street Sanitary Sewer and Water Main Replacement Project, according to a press release from the city.

The project will include roadway reconstruction, sanitary sewer replacement, water main replacement and storm sewer work, providing residents with an improved sanitary and water system and improved roadway surface and drainage.

J&N Construction is the contractor responsible for most of the work.

A “significant portion” of the project is being funded by a state revolving fund grant and loan through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Construction is expected to be “substantially completed by Nov. 15,” said Don Dailey, the assistant DPW director.

Detours will be announced as they come up, but at some point Mackinaw Avenue at Ball will likely be closed.

Throughout the course of the construction, there may be temporary restrictions of driveway access, water and sewer service may need to be shut off, and TV, internet and phone service may be lost.

“There may be other inconveniences during the project that are not listed here such as dust, noise, working hours, etc., but at the end of the project, you will have a brand new road and new utilities to use,” according to the release.

“We just ask for people’s patience,” Dailey added.
